Nancy Goldstein – Founder and Chief Strategist

NancyHeadshotNancy Goldstein founded Compass(x) Strategy with a mission to make business a Force for Good.  As Chief Strategist, Nancy brings 20 years of experience growing businesses of all shapes and sizes.  Her specialties include:  marketing strategy development, value propositions and positioning, brand communications, new product launches and business model development.

Prior to launching Compass(x) Strategy, Nancy was a Director of Consulting at Zyman Group, a boutique marketing strategy consulting firm founded by Sergio Zyman, the former CMO of Coca-Cola.  While at Zyman Group, Nancy led projects for clients as varied as: beverages, not-for-profit, pet food, industrials and financial services. Nancy co-authored a white paper on connecting brands to consumers in a digital world.  She also co-created an approach to identify and leverage consumer preference at key points in the decision-making process for durables and other “considered goods.”

Nancy honed her business building and marketing skills running some of the world’s most iconic brands.  Nancy was recruited to World Kitchen to turn around the struggling CorningWare and Revere brands – household staples for generations that had lost their way.  At Pillsbury and General Mills, Nancy ran large, complex businesses such as Old El Paso Mexican Food as well as launching new products such as Refrigerated Ready-to-Bake Cookies and Brownies.

Nancy earned an MBA from the Olin School at Washington University and a BA in Economics and Psychology from Tufts University.

In her free time, Nancy serves as Board Member and Marketing Chair for Climate Cycle, a Chicago non-profit whose mission is to “Inspire students to green our world.”  She is a massive fan of all things Joss Whedon, Arrested Development, new music, Katherine Hepburn movies….Simply put, she loves all things pop culture.

Marc Johnson

MarcHeadShotMarc Johnson believes that doing good and profitability are not mutually exclusive business objectives. Marc is an experienced marketing professional with 18 years of work in brand management, strategic planning, program development and project execution. He excels at creatively solving problems, particularly those involving limited resources and multiple stakeholders in diverse, entrepreneurial and high-growth environments.

Before Compass(x) Strategy, Marc held multiple leadership roles within forward-thinking, industry-leading organizations. He served as the Director of Marketing for Chicago’s award-winning Intelligentsia Coffee as the company tripled both its revenues and café locations while fundamentally changing the way in which specialty coffee was grown, harvested, purchased, roasted and served. Under Marc’s leadership the company’s efforts were featured by the New York Times, Saveur, GQ, and Los Angeles Times, among other publications.  Marc is most proud of his work at Intelligentsia helping coffee farmers generate greater incomes by asking customers to pay more money for a superior product; truly the intersection of “doing good and profitability.”

In his other roles, Marc helped create the new beverage category of all-natural functional drink as the Director of Marketing at Solixir, introduced Starbucks Coffee to states throughout the Midwest, and helped Fortune 500 and start-ups create and execute strategy at UPSHOT Marketing. He has worn many hats throughout his career and brings an incredible passion to his work.

Marc earned an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame.

Where does Marc fly his own “geek flag”? Reading the bio above, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he spends a great deal of time obsessing over coffee.  Whether critiquing his colleagues’ ability make the stuff, waxing rhapsodic over a new coffeebar, or discussing the pros and cons of the Chemex vs. a Hario pourover, it might just be best not to get him started… but if you do come by the Compass(x) offices, he guarantees that you will love whatever he prepares for you, especially when it is of the East African variety.

You can email Marc directly at marc@compassxstrategy.com.
