Nancy Goldstein – Founder and Chief Strategist

NancyHeadShotNewNancy Goldstein founded Compass(x) Strategy with a mission to make business a Force for Good.  As Chief Strategist, Nancy brings 20 years of experience growing businesses of all shapes and sizes.  Her specialties include:  marketing strategy development, value propositions and positioning, brand communications, new product launches and business model development.

Prior to launching Compass(x) Strategy, Nancy was a Director of Consulting at Zyman Group, a boutique marketing strategy consulting firm founded by Sergio Zyman, the former CMO of Coca-Cola.  While at Zyman Group, Nancy led projects for clients as varied as: beverages, not-for-profit, pet food, industrials and financial services. Nancy co-authored a white paper on connecting brands to consumers in a digital world.  She also co-created an approach to identify and leverage consumer preference at key points in the decision-making process for durables and other “considered goods.”

Nancy honed her business building and marketing skills running some of the world’s most iconic brands.  Nancy was recruited to World Kitchen to turn around the struggling CorningWare and Revere brands – household staples for generations that had lost their way.  At Pillsbury and General Mills, Nancy ran large, complex businesses such as Old El Paso Mexican Food as well as launching new products such as Refrigerated Ready-to-Bake Cookies and Brownies.

Nancy earned an MBA from the Olin School at Washington University and a BA in Economics and Psychology from Tufts University.

In her free time, Nancy serves as Board Member and Marketing Chair for Climate Cycle, a Chicago non-profit whose mission is to “Inspire students to green our world.”  She is a massive fan of all things Joss Whedon, Arrested Development, new music, Katherine Hepburn movies….Simply put, she loves all things pop culture.

Jen Minarik  
THIS ONE FOR JENJen Minarik joined Compass(x) Strategy in 2014, bringing more than ten years’ experience in marketing, sales, and business development at both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.

Jen previously worked at Follett Higher Education Group as one of a few Account Managers on a new intrapreneurial business development team responsible for leading the management and growth of over $2 billion in nationwide annual textbook sales at one of the oldest and largest college retail chains in North America. She advised presidents and provosts at many prestigious colleges and universities around the country on intellectual property strategy, particularly in the design of pioneering digital and rental textbook delivery programs. She facilitated partnerships with major publishers and trained faculty at business and medical schools in the use of the latest interactive learning technologies.

Prior to that, Jen held positions in event management, marketing, and admissions at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. She spearheaded the execution of public events for global business leaders, working with speakers ranging from international politicians to New York Times bestselling authors. She developed webinars, and coached the admissions team on using then-emerging social media channels such as LinkedIn to build stronger relationships with their predominantly mid-career prospective students.

Jen completed her Master of Science in Communication and Leadership at Northwestern University in 2013, where she studied B Corps in her Management of Social Enterprises class and decided that she, too, wanted to “B the change” she wished to see in the world. Her other coursework emphasized marketing strategy, change management, innovation, legal issues in technology, and understanding and leveraging networks. Jen also has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin American Studies with a minor in History from Lake Forest College, where she discovered the nerdy joys of archival research and gained newfound appreciation for everything from economic justice to lucha libre.

In her free time, Jen is passionate about storytelling and performing. She is an award-winning fiction writer working on her first full-length novel, and has studied stand-up comedy, improvisation, and songwriting. She is the proud owner of a Seth Godin action figure, and once helped an astronaut check his email.

Dan Nichols 

Dan'sHeadShotDan is all about digital, executing Compass(x) Strategy’s content management and digital strategies since early 2012. He has an nine year background in public communications and his specialties include:  marketing strategy, integrated marketing communication, copywriting, social media, journalism, campaign development and execution.

Prior to joining the business world, Dan served in the U.S. Army as a Public Affairs Specialist, combining the best elements of on the ground photojournalism, and public relations. While serving he worked in the smallest detachments overseeing daily operations of an eight person detachment, to being the lead social media coordinator at U.S. Army Europe Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. During his career with the military he covered over 300 stories for international audiences and was stationed in multiple countries including duty in Iraq and Kosovo.

Dan was the head of social media efforts when the U.S. Army first officially adopted the medium in 2009. He created the social media policy, standards, and procedures for headquarters and regional offices spread across four European countries and supporting 51 nations from Great Britain to Turkey, as well as units deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, resulting in the first full implementation of social media practices by U.S. Army Europe.

Dan completed his BA in Marketing Communications at Columbia College Chicago.

In his free time, Dan enjoys being an avid gamer, enjoying all things geek/tech, and being a mass consumer of media with an undying appetite for TV shows and movies.
